New Jersey Wildfire Map as New York City Warned of Fires

A map created by Newsweek shows the locations of various wildfires currently burning in New Jersey as New York City was warned by the National Weather Service (NWS) of fires on Friday.
A dry spell across the Northeast has exacerbated drought and wildfire conditions across several states, and on Friday, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service warned of several fires that had broken out across the state.
Wildfires are burning across the Garden State, though most of them are concentrated in the central and southern parts.
The full list of fires currently burning in New Jersey, according to the state forest fire service includes the following:
Halloween Wildfire in Downe Township, Cumberland County; Bethany Run Wildfire in Evesham Township, Burlington County and Voorhees Township, Camden County; Pheasant Run Wildfire in Glassboro Township, Gloucester County; Shotgun Wildfire in Jackson Township, Ocean County; Industrial Parkway Wildfire in Livingston Township, Essex County; Craigmeur Lookout Wildfire in Rockaway Township, Morris County; Microwave Wildfire in Rockaway Township, Morris County; Hayes Mill Wildfire in Waterford Township, Camden County; Tea Time Hill Wildfire in Woodland Township, Burlington County; and Englewood Cliffs Wildfire in Bergen County.
Newsweek has reached out to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service by email for comment.
In addition to seeing smoke from the New Jersey fires, fire conditions also were present in New York City.
“Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” an NWS red flag warning in place for the area said. “A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected or occurring. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels will create a significantly elevated fire growth potential.”
The warning area includes the Lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island, as well as other parts of the Empire State.
The red flag warning will remain in place for New York City until Saturday night. According to the warning, northwest winds were gusting as high as 35 miles per hour and relative humidity was as low as 25 percent during the day.
The New Jersey wildfires were emitting smoke visible in New York City.
“Wildfires outside of NYC means you may smell smoke,” NYC Emergency Management posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Air quality overall forecast for today is 48, and current conditions are at 58 (Moderate). NYCEM continues to monitor for any impacts to the city & any updates to the forecast.”
New Jersey residents also were facing smoky conditions, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
“SMOKEADVISORY: NJ residents can expect smoke conditions stemming from several large wildfires burning throughout the state to last for several days,” the forest fire service posted to X. “The smoke conditions are due to the extremely dry conditions which has allowed the fires to burn down into the duff layer of soil.”
Smoky conditions could worsen overnight Friday for New Jersey and will remain present “until significant rain falls over the fire areas,” the forest fire service added.
