    Description

PCGS 1c 1857 Flying Eagle Cent Elliptical Clip XF45
PCGS 1c 1857 Flying Eagle Cent Elliptical Clip XF45
The coin is struck on an elliptical clipped planchet, and has an "oval shape" as a result.
Elliptical clips occur when the planchet strip is only partially punched out when fed into the blanking press, and then the strip shifts and is punched again, overlapping the previous punch area, but this time fully punching out the blank. The blank then separates into two pieces, with one of those pieces being an "elliptical clipped blank".
Extremely rare error type for the flying eagle series, with probably less than 2 or 3 known. This is the only example we have ever handled. Finding another example in the next decade is unlikely.
The coin is ex-Fred Weinberg Collection.
